Floyd Against Drugs participated in a butterfly release event to commemorate International Overdose Awareness Day, a global event held on August 31 each year that aims to raise awareness of overdose and reduce the stigma of drug-related death. It also acknowledges the grief felt by families and friends remembering those who have died or had a permanent injury as a result of drug overdose.
International Overdose Awareness Day spreads the message that overdose death is preventable. Thousands of people die each year from drug overdose. They come from all walks of life.
This year’s butterfly release held at the Clock Tower in downtown Rome, Georgia, was a time of remembrance, honor, and reflection attended by more than 90 local citizens and organized by members of Floyd Against Drugs, teens from Drug Free Future, and a new Coalition. Executive Director of FAD, Dale Styers, and David Thornton, chaplain for the Floyd County Sheriff’s Office, opened the event with a word of prayer.
